Know Who Jesus Is - Part 1

Christmas may have passed, but its significance remains central to our faith. For many, the season is overshadowed by traditions and symbols like Santa Claus. Yet its true meaning lies in the birth of Jesus Christ—the one who holds the power of eternal life.

John 17:1-3 illustrates this truth. In His prayer, Jesus declares that the Father has given Him all authority and the power to grant eternal life. Through Him, the invisible and unapproachable God reveals Himself to humanity. Knowing Jesus intimately is the key to eternal life - a gift only He can give.

Sadly, many have replaced Jesus in their hearts with the traditions and symbols of the season. As Mark 13:6 warns, "Many will come in my name." This serves as a reminder that false representations of Jesus can arise, leading people astray. We must diligently study Scripture to ensure we follow the true Jesus because only He can give eternal life.

So, Who Is This Jesus?

The answer begins in the writings of Moses, which, though written centuries before Christ, point unmistakably to Him. In Genesis 3:15, Jesus is described as the seed of the woman who will crush the serpent’s head, a promise of victory over sin and evil. Later, in Genesis 12:3, God’s covenant with Abraham foretells that all nations would be blessed through his lineage, a promise ultimately fulfilled in Christ. The near-sacrifice of Isaac in Genesis 22 powerfully foreshadows the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, demonstrating God’s plan of redemption.

In Exodus 12, the Passover lamb symbolizes Jesus, the Lamb of God, whose blood brings salvation, as affirmed in John 1:29 and 1 Corinthians 5:7.

Similarly, the story in Numbers 21, where Moses lifts up the bronze serpent in the wilderness, points to Jesus being lifted on the cross for our redemption, as John 3:14-15 explains. Deuteronomy 18:15-19 records Moses’ prophecy about a prophet like himself, fulfilled perfectly in Jesus. Finally, Leviticus 16 presents the Day of Atonement, which points to Jesus as the ultimate High Priest who offers the perfect and final sacrifice, as described in Hebrews 9:11-12.

These writings of Moses preach the Gospel long before Jesus’ birth. As Jesus Himself declared in John 5:46-47, "If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me." Each account, whether a promise, prophecy, or symbol, reveals that Jesus is not a later addition to God's plan, but the very foundation of it from the very beginning.

The writings of Moses testify to God’s unchanging plan to redeem humanity through His Son. As Hebrews 10:9 reminds us, when Christ came into the world, He declared, "Here I am - I have come to do Your will." Through this will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, once for all.

Though Christmas may feel far behind, the truth of Jesus’ identity remains vital every day of the year. Let us not allow the distractions of tradition or the passage of time to obscure the central question: Do you know who Jesus is? Let the writings of Moses guide you to the answer. Let the Word lead you to Him. May this message renew your faith and draw you closer to the Savior, who was, is, and always will be the center of Scripture and the source of eternal life.
